Summary of the role

At Blue North, the Senior Data Engineer fills a critical role on the Technology Services team reporting directly to the Senior Director, Technology Services.

As the day-to-day responsibilities of the data team expand to serve a wider variety of stakeholders and data products, Blue North has identified the need for an operationally focused and experienced data engineer to help establish and implement foundational data best practices, procedures, and leadership.

This role is important to Blue North in order to continue the aggressive data processing and data infrastructure work already underway, streamline legacy system migration, and provide a foundational data framework to develop both internal & client-facing new data-driven products & services.



Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the extraction and analysis of complex information from a variety of data sources to support analysis, reporting, and marketing automation
  • Lead the development and deployment of data products in collaboration with internal, cross-functional teams
  • Implement, maintain, and enhance Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Security, and related policies, in alignment with Blue North’s standards and frameworks
  • Influence and establish data engineering standard methodologies through solid design decisions, processes, and tools
  • Assess the technical feasibility of newly-created product ideas and continuously propose implementation solutions while identifying risk throughout the design and development life-cycle
  • Promote and advocate for writing logical, pragmatic code, frequently performing code reviews
  • Integrate and support monitoring applications to provide insight into application state, health, and performance
  • Assist with the plan, design and implementation of a robust data solutions based on a thorough analysis of requirements and considering best practices, including but not limited to database physical structure, functional capabilities, scalability, reusability, and security
  • Implement processes aligned to data management standards and ensure data quality and data requirements are embedded in and adhered to within data team deliverables
  • Communicate regularly with external clients and internal clients

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or robust experience in a related field
  • 5-8 years overall Data Engineering experience with 3+ years in a senior technical role
  • 5+ years building & deploying data integration (ETL) workflows from multiple sources including but not limited to databases (MSSQL, MYSQL, other), flat files, JSON/XML, APIs
  • 5+ years supporting a broad range of data functions including data architecture, data quality, data profiling, and data security
  • Expert in writing and optimizing ANSI SQL to support analysis, report design, and other specialized data management functions
  • 5+ years Python programming experience designing & deploying ETL workflows, microservices, APIs, and web interfaces
  • 3+ years Amazon Web Service environment experience with specific knowledge of: S3, RDS, EC2, IAM, Lambda, CloudWatch, CloudFormation, and API Gateway
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, exercising sound judgement in client engagement with ability to act professionally with all levels across the organization
  • Collaborate with business and technology partners to elicit information/data requirement and articulate those requirements in a manner that can be easily understood by team members
  • Works well with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities


Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

  • Advanced level Excel, including Pivot Tables, Charts, and advanced functions
  • Variable print composition or personalized digital campaigns
  • Experience with Microsoft SSMS, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, PowerShell
  • Experience with Containers & Container Orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) and CI/CD pipelines & tools (GitLab, Jenkins, Travis)
  • Knowledge or experience developing & implementing policies for data security and privacy compliance (SOC, PCI, etc)
  • Experience with Visual Studio or similar
  • Experience with Talend, Informatica, Pentaho, or similar
  • Experience with Tableau, Alteryx, or similar
  • 1-3 years of experience, preferably in an agency or fundraising environment

  • This role will report to the Senior Director, Technology Services
